Billiards FAQs
How much room do I need to have a pool table?
The room that you put a pool table into has to have at least 57 inches of space around the table before the walls start. That is the standard length of a cue which provides the minimum space needed. So if you have a 7 foot table you need a room that is about 9 feet by 12 feet big. Shortened cues and open walls can decrease this size, but shorter cues are not as accurate and feel much differently. The skills learned with a short cue may not transfer to a regular sized cue. The more space the better, a cramped room is not desirable for anyone, even a spacious garage is better than an elegant but small palace.
How much do pool tables cost?
Pool tables range in pricing from “free if you can move it” to over $10,000. An average table that has a slate surface and is constructed well will cost about $2,000. Deals can be found, but they are often of lower quality. Pool tables should only be purchased if you are going to be playing a lot of pool with plenty of friends. They are an investment that can easily go unused for much of its life, making a used table an excellent choice in many situations. A better way to play is to become a member at a pool hall. The fees are generally small but the atmosphere is fun and exiting. There are plenty more players in a pool hall than even the most popular person could invite over making them an excellent place to learn and compete.
What is snooker?
Snooker is played in a 2 by 4m table and has six narrow pockets with rounded openings. Twenty-two balls are used: 15 red balls, 6 balls of various colors and one cue ball. Players score points by pocketing red balls and colored balls alternately. When pocketed the colored balls are returned to the tables to their assigned places while the red balls remain out of play. When all the red balls are gone the colored balls are pocketed in numerical order. Red balls are worth 1 point while the other colored balls vary in amount depending on their color. This is the most popular billiards game in Britain.
What cue weight is best?
That is a question that comes down to personal preference. The best way to find out is to pick one up and hit a ball with it. They range in weight from 15 to 24 ounces and each player prefers different weights. A heavy cue is good for powerful strikes and strong pool players while many players say that a lighter cue has more feel allowing the player to strike the ball more accurately. It really just comes down to preference, so go out and try a range of different weights over a few games of eight ball with some friends.
